New Power Chairs
A power chair --as opposed to a full-size or travel mobility scooter-- is distinguished by its smaller overall size, the lack of a front steering column, and controls mounted on the unit's armrest. Power chairs are usually the right choice of those who need indoor maneuverability as much as outdoor stability. Also referred to as power wheelchairs or electric wheelchairs, these mobility devices depend on the electric charge stored in their battery system and require no muscle power to operate.
The primary benefit of the power chair is its compactness. With a "footprint" that is not significantly any larger than that of most manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs have the tight turning radius necessary to navigate the home, the office or the shopping aisle. Unlike traditional mobility scooters, power chairs do not require the rider to operate a steering wheel or tiller. With armrest controls, even if a person is limited to the use of a single hand, then they can still successfully operate electric wheelchairs.
