Transport Manual Wheelchairs
A transport wheelchair or transfer chair is a specialized mobility device that is often seen in hospitals, airports and nursing homes. Sometimes called a travel wheelchair or companion wheelchair, they are distinguished by the small rear wheels that cannot be reached by the patient, and require an attendant or companion to push the wheelchair. As a result, wheelchair transportation becomes safer for the patient.
The smaller rear wheels also mean that the transport wheelchair has a smaller, narrower "footprint" in confined spaces such as elevators and hallways. An additional benefit of the transfer chair is the unrivaled nimbleness and smaller turn radius. Almost all travel wheelchair models ares foldable, lightweight and very easy for the attendant to push. These features make the transfer chair a favored method of wheelchair transportation by medical institutions and care-givers.
